Breast Reduction: Should You Worry About Scarring?

Breast reduction is a major surgery that involves the removal of breast tissue to reduce the size of your breasts. You can get your breast reduced to your desired size either for medical, or aesthetic reasons.

The most common side effect of breast reduction surgery is scarring. After you’ve undergone the surgery, it’s best to consult our qualified scars plastic surgeon in Miami with regards to the type of scar revision procedure suitable for your needs.

Breast reduction in a nutshell

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the total number of breast reduction surgeries performed increased by 11% in 2017. Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a go-to procedure for women with breasts that are large and disproportionate to the point of discomfort

Large breasts, or macromastia, in women can cause neck pain, back pain, and shoulder pain. You may also feel some skin irritation under your breast. Men who have gynecomastia are also candidates for breast reduction surgery. Gynecomastia is the swelling of the breasts of men due to hormonal imbalance.

The surgery

Before the surgical procedure, your surgeon will perform a thorough assessment of your medical history to make sure that you are qualified to undergo the procedure. If you are a smoker, you will be asked to stop smoking  for some time before and after the surgery. This is to ensure that you will heal properly.

During the surgery, which usually takes two to five hours, you will be put under general anesthesia. Your surgeon will create a keyhole-shaped incision around your nipple and down to the crease beneath your breast. The nipple is reduced in size by removing excess skin. Extra breast fat and skin are also removed, the remaining breast tissues are lifted, and the nipple is repositioned until the desired size and shape are achieved

The incision is closed with a layer of stitches to form the now-smaller breasts. Sterile dressings are applied over the incision site for extra protection until the area is completely healed. After the surgery, you may need to wear a surgical bra for extra support and to minimize swelling.

Scarring after the surgery

Breast reduction incisions become permanent and visible scars. Initially, the surgical area looks pink, or red in color. Days later, this area will look flatter and darker as your scar heals. People with darker skin color are more prone to develop hyperpigmentation and keloids. Avoid lifting heavy objects after the surgery, as this can make the scar look worse. Smoking, scratching, and scrubbing can also worsen the appearance of the surgical scar.

Scar revision for breast reduction scars

One of the most effective ways to improve the appearance of scars is through scar revision – a procedure offered by our highly qualified plastic surgeon for scars in Miami, Dr. Zaydon.

Scar revision surgery can help minimize the scar’s size and pigmentation, making it blend well with the appearance and texture of the surrounding skin. You will first be evaluated for the type of scar tissue you have to determine the best option for your needs. These may include topical treatments, injectable treatments, surface treatments, dermabrasion, laser resurfacing, chemical peel solutions, and excision.

As scar revision is a very personal decision, it is best if you talk to a reliable plastic surgeon for scars in Miami to get a personalized treatment plan for your breast reduction scar.
